On Friday April 28 at approximately 5:15 pm two UVM students called for assistance while attempting to descend from a hike up Mt. Mansfield. The party had ascended from Stevensville Road in Underhill and reached just below the Forehead. Due to the difficulty of the route they had come up, they decided to descend via the Long Trail to Butler Lodge then down the Butler Lodge Trail. They lost the LT when they inadvertently made a turn onto the Forehead Bypass. After following the blue blazes for about 30 minutes (and realizing they should have been white for the LT) they called 911. Stowe Mtn. Rescue personnel were able to confirm that they were on the Forehead bypass headed back up Mt. Mansfield. Due to the late hour of the day and slow going due to deep snow they were advised to continue on the Bypass until they reached the Toll Road, then to descend to the Octagon at the top of the Forerunner Quad at the Stowe ski area. Members of Stowe Mountain Rescue were transported to that location with assistance from Stowe Mountain Resort in a snow cat where the subjects were brought down the mountain and given a ride back to their car in Underhill.
