Subject was hiking down Sterling Pond Trail very late in the day without a map or headlamp. He lost the trail in the dark, then turned around and reported he went up hill for about an hour, and stopped at around 3,000' unable to continue due to darkness. He called 911 for assistance, reported he was wet and cold, but otherwise okay.
Phone coordinates indicated he was close to the Long Trail (Elephant's Head Trail) about 1/3 of the way between the Snuffy's intersection and the spur trail that goes to the Elephant's Head vista in Smuggler's Notch. One team of Stowe Mountain Rescue members drove to the top of the Sterling access road and hiked down Snuffy's. Another team of SMR members and Vermont State Police proceeded up the Sterling Pond Trail. The upper team made voice contact with subject and were able to locate him. They provided him with warm clothing and a headlamp and hiked with him to the top of the access road, then drove him down the mountain and up to the notch to his vehicle.
