Five back-country skiers touring from Bolton to Trapps on the Catamount Trail left Bolton around noon. A member of the party caught an edge in un-tracked, crusty snow. The subject felt a tearing sensation in his right knee and stated it felt very unstable. He attempted to walk on the injury, but was unable to due so. Three party members evactuated while one party member remained with the subject. They started a fire and applied a ski pole and duct tape splint.
SMR responded from Michigan Valley and was able to get snow machines and ATV up above the "Old Camp" to the start of the first switchback and then proceed on snowshoes. Team members reached the patient, who was evaluated and packaged in a litter. Subject was evacuated manually to and then brought out by snowmobile. They were transferred to Stowe Rescue at trailhead.
