A solo hiker was reported overdue when he did not return to the house where he was visiting.  His vehicle was located at the end of Route 108 in Cambridge at the entrance to Smuggler's Notch. He had reportedly called his friends around noon saying that he was "hiking up Mt. Masnfield and would be taking the gondola down." He did not say where he was at the time, or what trail he would be hiking on.  He was not familiar with the area and did not have a map. It had been raining hard all day with temperatures in the 30's and 40's, with temperatures starting to drop. Hasty teams were deployed to several different hiking trails. At approximately 1am he called his friends from a house on Andrews Road in Underhill asking to be picked up.  Apparently he hiked to the summit where he experienced whiteout conditions.  The only trail he was able to find was the Sunset Ridge Trail which led down the west side of the mountain, away from his destination. After descending part way down the trail he said he saw some lights off to the north, took a compass bearing on them, and left the trail to bushwack for several miles eventually ending up on a road.
