Vermont State Police requested assistance in evaluating a situation with two hikers who had gotten separated from their party north of Puffer Shelter on the Long Trail south of Stowe. The two people called 911 on their cell phone when they realized they were off the trail and it was getting dark. Team leader Neil Van Dyke was able to contact the party, and determined that they had wandered off the west side of the ridge. They had sleeping bags with them, and with clear weather forecast it was decided to have them spend the night where they were and they were given directions on how to hike back up to find the trail in the morning, which they did without further incident.
