A short and very confusing call was received from a woman who said she had walked past the previous scene on the Long Trail, but was now "lost next to the side of a road." Her cell phone coordinates showed her location as across Route 108, more than 5 miles from the trail. Stowe Police checked that area thoroughly, and all trailheads, roads (including ski area work roads) in the vicinity of Mt. Masnsfield were checked. Eventually a story was pieced together using witnesses that led investigators to believe that she had started to walk down the Toll Road, had gotten caught by dark and called 911, then was shortly thereafter picked up by a companion by auto. The assumption was that they never had the courtesy to call back to report that she was OK.
